Thoughts on WWDC
As every year is, 2013 was a very big year for Apple. New iOS, OS X, Macbook Airs and Mac Pros were the major announcements of todays keynote. I will only talk about OS X and iOS because the new Air and Pro do not really matter to me.
OS X
I was unsure what to really expect from OS X this year. Name wise and features wise, everybody was really just guessing. The name for 10.9 ended up being Mavericks. That is right. They didn’t go with a Cat, they went with Mavericks. Beside that making absoultlety no sense, 10.9 does have some pretty cool features. A very important feature to me is fixed full screen apps with multiple displays. THANK YOU. Using full screen apps connected to my monitor was just so terrible. They should have fixed it after Lion but nope. Really glad to see they have gotten rid of this. Also, tabbbed Finder is awesome. This is possibly my favorite feature of the new OS. Using Finder is sometimes just a pain and to see a great new feature like tabs is awesome. Other things like Safari updates and Apple Maps are irrelevant to me (just got new Google Maps and I am a Chrome fanboy). Improved notifications is cool, Keychain is cool, New Calendar is cool. Nothing to awesome beside the tabbed browsing and full screen apps fixed. I am really pissed that it will be released in Fall, though. I have no understanding of that because the last 2 updates came out in Summer. It is a disappointment to wait so long but hopefully it comes sooner than later. It is a solid update overall but nothing awesome.
iOS
This is year is Apple’s biggest year for iOS yet. Finally, finally, Apple has retouched their design. As a person who follows a lot of design, I have to say I am disappointed with many of aspects of iOS 7. The icons look WAY too cartoony. I have seen better mockups on Dribbble! Other parts of the OS looks cluttered and almost uncomfortable (Messages). I don’t mean to hate on Apple, it is just that multiple parts just don’t look good, especially the Control Center thing. It is so cluttered and unfinished that I could do a better job. I expect a lot more from Apple. Almost all of the new features were Android catch up. There are some very attractive parts and the font is really nice too. Overall, it just isn’t what I as a designer, hoped for.

Overall, Apple took steps today. Not all were huge but a step forward is a step forward. I would have liked to seen better features and designs but this is what Apple people have got. I am still proud to be an Android person today. Google is a step ahead right now.

Star Trek: Into Darkness
This weekend I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness. (This review won’t be too long.)
Now besides Man of Steel, this is the movie I wanted to see the most this year. JJ Abrams reached just my expectations. Into Darkness was simply awesome. The action is awesome, the twists were awesome and the overall experience was awesome. This makes me grow as a Star Trek fan even more as I hopefully await a 3rd installment to this series. My favorite part of this film was Benedict Cumberbatch role as John Harrisson, also known as (Spoiler)

Khan. Cumberbatch played the role fantastic. His brilliant preformance combined with Khan’s kick-ass character was simply badass. I actually was cheering for Khan to win. This was easily one of my favorite villains in the past few years and even more than that.
However, no film is without it’s flaws. The film gets sometime hard to follow with important details sometimes missed. (Spoiler: Like when Spock kept Khan’s people on his ship but sent the torpedos.) Also, the whole movie I was asking myself where the Klingons were.
Star Trek: Into Darkness is an absolutely astonishing movie. This only gets me more excited for the new Star Wars films and 3rd installment of the Star Trek series. The pacing of Into Darkness, really defines it, as it is nearly perfect as Abrams delivers another awesome film. This is a must watch for all Star Trek fans and Sci-Fi film fans.

Iron Man 3 Review

Like many people, last week I saw the highly anticipated Iron Man 3. I have a very mixed view on the movie. The best way to start off a review is to talk about the movies before it. The first Iron Man, was awesome. Awesome acting, action and writing. Iron Man 2, as we all know, not so much. Very weak movie. The Avengers of course was awesome and Iron Man 3 being the first post Avengers movie is very important to Marvel’s Phase 2. The first part of this review will not contain spoilers, do not worry.

Overall I thought Iron Man 3 was “good”. Personally, I did not love it but I did not hate it. The action is typical Marvel, awesome. Robert Downey Jr’s performance as Tony Stark is so good. This can not be stressed enough. He is the only person who can play Tony Stark. However, I some things I didn’t really like. The story is okay. I wanted a more serious story. The light Marvel style jokey movie style has worked for them and when I saw the first Iron Man 3 trailer, I thought it would drift away from that and be actually serious.
The rest of this will be SPOILERS.

My main problem with this film is the twist. Of course. I was excited to see the Mandarin! He is Tony’s arch nemesis. And what do they give us?
GUY PEARCE.
Now I don’t hate Pearce (I love Memento) but really. Pearce is mad because 13 years before the story takes place Tony blows him off. So Pearce is so pissed he decides to… wait that is another problem.
What is Killian’s plan? HE DOESN’T HAVE ONE. He is just going to kill Tony for blowing him off? It just doesn’t make sense.
The Mandarin was supposed to be the most badass Iron Man villain we have ever seen. We of course didn’t get that. It really took me out of the film.

Overall, I thought Iron Man 3 was good. Not great, just good. A few real problems took me out of the movie and it really hurt.
P.S  Please don’t make an Iron Man 4

Man of Steel: Trailer 3 Analysis

Of course there are high expectations for Zack Synder and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Superman film, Man of Steel. Not only for movie watchers but all comic book fans, to deliver a serious Superman movie for all fans. In July we got the short teaser that really didn’t show too much, the only grabbing moment was Superman breaking the sound barrier at the end of the trailer. Then in December we got out first full length trailer and it showed much more without revealing a lot. We did see many characters, Superman flying and even a quick look at Zod. Since then we have had nothing but rumors and speculation, with no new footage.

Until Sunday night at the MTV Movie Awards. In a staticy video, General Zod asked Superman to turn himself in. The video wasn’t long and didn’t really give a lot of detail to the film, but then people found the website iwillfindhim.com, which had a countdown in weird, foreign-looking numbers. It was widely specualted that this was a countdown for a third Man of Steel trailer and at 8 ET on Tuesday, April 16, the rumors were true. The website now shows a 3rd trailer, which is now also on Warner Bros Youtube channel.

It is long, but for good reason. Let me start with my analysis.

The first minute doesn’t show too much new footage but does show us more of the struggle Clark goes through while growing up. Around the 1:20 we see Lois Lane as Amy Adams, SO FINALLY. In the second trailer we do not see her until the very end holding Clark’s hands and she wasn’t given any other time. Here we see it looks like she is chasing Superman (not yet none as Superman, just an alien) and mentions how he is covering his tracks and she is struggling to find him. Then Clark is shown saving lives in some sort of work-related accident. For the next 30 seconds or so we see footage from the second trailer, but then it gets good.

TONS of new footage here as we see Superman escape some glowing octupus-type creature, some explosions and Superman summoning some blue light with his hand. AND THEN WE GET SOME ZOD. He is looking for Superman and asks (not sure what parent it is) if they think Clark is safe. Another interesting bit after that as we see the Military threaten Superman, of course they will take him into custody as we later see and saw in the second trailer. More explosions, Superman running fast and then right around 2: 25 we see some giant Skyscraper looking thing. That is not made clear. After that, more explosions until we get a look at Lois and Clark talking, actually more like Clark being interrogated but she asks about his “S”, Clark says it means hope and she suggests a name sounding something like “Supe” but then gets cut-off. Wow, good one Christopher Night Shyamalan.

Anyway, after that we get about 2 seconds of, what I assume to be Zod and Superman, in which Superman whoops his ass with that last punch and then the trailer ends.

I have very high hopes for this movie and so far it is looking very good. Not everything is explained which is good, it only gets me more excited for the movie. I hope this is the last of the new footage. I would hate for more to get out and possibly give too much away. I think the amount of footage we have been given up to this point is perfect.

If I had to rate this trailer it would easily be a 9 because the build up and presentation was so fantastic and the trailer delivered too. I could not be more excited for this film. The score fit so well too, I am hoping that was Zimmer. June 14th can’t come soon enough.
